She Can Dog Whisper!

A dear friend of mine, a Dog Behavior Consultant, was asked by one of her clients why she started getting into the Dog Whisper Method.

She said, "At the start, I did everything wrong. We grew up with dogs being treated as our kids. So I did it that way. I realized that I was doing things wrong when my Cocker Spaniel bit my mother in the face."

Why Did I Learn To Dog Whisper?

Obviously, I've always been passionate about dogs and learning all I could. But the real reason that I wanted to learn this - how to really communicate with a dog in its own dog body language, to dog whisper - was because some members of my family had some really out-of-control dogs that were simply not respectful of people.

My grandfather's Border Collie and Australian Shepherd were totally balanced, awesome dogs. They were workers. But after both of them had died, my grandparents got a little spoiled wretch of a Cocker Spaniel, Candy.

Candy hated everyone except my grandfather. She owned him! She made it clear by bearing her teeth, especially at my grandmother, and blocking her access to him.

Then the highlight struck. She peed on me!

I took a deep breath, then removed her by the scruff of her neck, and forced her into a sitting position on the floor. I planted that little butt down firmly! (Not hurting her, of course, but I meant business.)

Then I sent her away, not fully recognizing that my body language was perfect to do so. Candy's head and ears went down. She had crossed the boundary, and she knew it.

My grandfather was stunned. He had never seen Candy submit to anything. "You have a way with her," he told me later in private.

"Granddaddy, Candy's not very nice. She's really going to bite someone. And if that someone ends up being Granny. . ."

Granddaddy chuckled, nodding.

A child of nine, I did not know that day that my decision of how to direct my life had been set in stone. I wanted to stop dogs from controlling people in a way that the dogs understood, and that did not harm them. My dream was to become a true pack leader.

I saw so many dogs who had basic dog obedience down, but who were still nasty little wretches. That's when I realized that dog obedience training was not enough. I saw the expressions of disdain in dogs' eyes as owners exclaimed over them. And I saw how other dogs would handle the situation, cleanly and finally.

The years of exposure to the horse whisper, wolf pack ways, and myriad dogs. . . It all came together with the Dog Whisper.

Dog Whisper Tip - When Your Little Dog Is Bullied

What happens when small dogs get bullied by larger dogs? Most people step in and pick up the little guy, trying to comfort him because of the trauma he just went through.

What most people do not realize is that petting an animal who is under stress only reinforces and nurishes the dog's stressed feeling.

Here's a Dog Whisper Tip.

The correct way to handle this kind of situation is to block the attacker and calm him down. Then make him smell the little guy's rear. This removes the trauma from both.

And once your dog has calmed down, give him all the affection you want!

Dog Whisper Method - Red Zone Case

Why do people who use the "Dog Whisper Method" ask the owners of "Red Zone" dogs to leave the room when they are working with them?

The reason is, the owner has become the source of power for the dog. With the owner not in the picture, it is easier to accomplish the first steps of rehabilitation.

Also, most people panic when their dog shows aggression. Panic intensifies this, and puts the handler at much greater risk.

Dog Whispering - More Consistent and Effective Than Positive Reinforcement Training

The most important rule of dog whispering is to remember that dog whispering is about seeing things from the dog's point of view.

I once heard a child say, "Mommy, does dog whispering mean you whisper in the dog's ear?"

What people don't realize is that by not taking time to observe dog behavior, through positive reinforcement we are often creating dog behavior problems.

Think about it.

If Rusty jumps on you, and you remove the paws gently saying, "No, no," very sweetly, that's not serious. So as far as he's concerned, you agree with the behavior.

It's the same with getting on the bed, or the sofa. If he gets up there and nobody removes him, he sees that as saying he can get up there any time he wants to.

It is for this reason that I do not like positive reinforcement training at all. It sends too many mixed messages.

The biggest mistakes I see made are rewarding bad dog behavior with affection, or simply ignoring it and thinking that with time it will go away.

Behaviors you don't agree with have to be addressed promptly and firmly. I'm not talking about being mean. There's a big difference between being mean and being firm.

Dog whispering means listen!

Does the "Dog Whisper Method" Really Work on a Red Zone Case?

Some people really question if the Dog Whisper Method will work on a "red zone" dog aggression case.

I speak from personal experience, because I use the Dog Whisper Method. It DOES work! The crazy ones are the "dog whisper wanna-be's" that don't know what they are doing.

A red zone case is nothing to fool with. Any dog is capable of inflicting serious damage; however, these are the dogs that WILL inflict it. Being struck with a level 3 or more dog bite is like having several electric shocks sent through your body at the same time. The use of the injured body part is limited for a few hours up to a few days, and may require a trip to the emergency room.

The Dog Whisper Method has saved the lives of many dogs who would otherwise be euthanised. Dogs on whom Dog Trainers gave up in despair. After all, no amount of customary "dog training" can begin to solve these psychological problems!

I found a couple of things the "Dog Whisperer," Cesar Millan, has done to be crazy by my definition. But I am not going around slandering him, because I don't want people to do that to me. He does a lot of good things, and has saved a lot of dogs.

There are several of us out there who know how to do these methods. The message is not to knock the Dog Whisper Method, but to knock trying to do what you do not know how to do ... And not knowing when the dog has really had it ... And when and how to stop, to touch back ...

The results can be lethal!

Dog Whisper and Dog Body Language -How Important Are They?

I'm not sure when the title "Dog Whisperer" was first really used, although I have read about some "early users." But I do know that people with that gift have been around since the beginning of time. So the title belongs to no one.

I use the dog whispering technique simply because for 8 out of 10 dogs, it works easier and faster than other techniques. It is a lot easier for dogs if you show them through dog body language what you want.

Instead of saying "Leave it" and getting now response, CLAIM it and get: "Okay, no problem!"

Instead of being frustrated because you never catch Rover in the act of destroying your shoes, learn how you can correct his bad dog behavior without destroying his emotions.

The Dog Whisper method is often the last hope for extreme fearful, hyperactive, dominant, or aggressive dogs that are simply driving their owners off the wall. You are never going to take a hyperactive dog, screem at it, and change its dog behavior.

Same with all these other guys. You are going to have to set up an effective communication system - which is Dog Body Language.

Treat Training - My Dog Won't Come Without It!

Several clients say to me: "My dog won't come to me when I call him, but when I get a hotdog for him, he's right there!"

What they don't realize is that they are teaching the dog two bad dog behaviors. Eventually, the dog will become bored with the hot dog. What do you do then?

You have to depend on your dog to come to you without a treat. That's why I have no use for "treat training." It can also turn some pets into aggressive dogs... They start nipping at their owners when they don't get the treat. Same with horses.

Have you been teaching a dog to come but with little or no success?

If you call your dog and he does not come, move toward him calmly and with authority. Take him by the scruff of the neck, and MAKE him come to you. Repeat your word-signal-sound as he moves, so that he puts two and two together. Whistle, "come," signal ... any of those that you use mean "come forward NOW, not when I feel like it!"

You should never grab your dog when you are angry. That can result in a dog bite, even from the most mild-mannered dog if he is startled.

That's why I press again. Your touch must be calm and with authority.

The reason it is so important to make the action happen right away is that dogs live in the moment. They remember what happened in that moment. Always keep that in mind.

Correcting Dog Behavior Problem - What Does CLAIM Something Mean? How Do I?

"My dog goes after my slippers," a client complained. "Help! How can I solve this dog behavior problem?"

ANSWER: You CLAIM your slippers!

You "claim" an item or an area to assert your authority over it - to let the dog know that it belongs first and foremost to YOU, the leader of the pack. The dog is not supposed to touch your property.

Likewise, if a dog soils an area of the carpet, part of your correction procedure involves "claiming" that spot as your own ... and the dog won't go there again. The dog is not supposed to cross the boundary into your space without your permission. This he understands instinctively, as it is powerful, silent dog pack language - sometimes called "dog whisper".

HOW do you claim something?

By stepping in front of it with your feet spread halfway between the military "Atten-hut!" and "At ease." Have your head and shoulders up confidently the entire time, and also be sure to maintain direct eye contact with your dog throughout this entire procedure.

Make the dog sit or lie down.

You keep standing there authoritatively, staring, until the dog turns away from you or moves away completely. That means she has surrendered. She now recognizes the item or the space as yours - that she is not supposed to go there without your express permission.
