Dog Humping - Bump the Hump!
One dog mounting over another one's head, or even unsheathing his penis, is fairly common. The unsheathing is to release his scent on the other dog.
Think about this fact: If a male dog mounts a female, his equipment does not miss its target. He does not fail to put it in the right place. If his intentions toward another male dog were sexual, it would be done. Note that his aim, when riding up from behind the other dog, is OVER the tail and back, not under the tail.
No, that is NOT sexual! Riding up on another dog's back raises the first dog above him. It's a reminder that, "Hey, you're not the boss here!"
When the dog mounts another one's head, he is going to one of the most extreme displays of dominance in the dog world. The head is the highest part of the dog. Bringing the head down brings the dog down from his highest point. It's all about who is higher than whom.
When a dog unsheaths his penis and releases liquid, that forces the dog who is leaked on to wear the scent of the dominant one. It's a very potent scent and stays for some time, making the low rank obvious for many miles - and even to other packs within scent range.
So remember, there are no such things as "gay dogs."

I'm wondering how to stop the dog from humping my seven-year old and knocking over my two-year-old when trying to do the same to her?
This is actualy not our dog but is very friendly and patient with our girls and really wants to be our friend. If he is going to keep wandering through our yard, I would really like to be able to nip this behavior in the bud.
It seems to me that if this is a dominance thing that each of the children need to somehow show that they are the "boss" rather than the dog. Is this correct?
I have a female (Spayed) 3 year old Australian Sheppard, and she humps (or tries to) all the members of the Family , but the most disturbing thing is when she is in our bedroomand my husband and I are .. Engaged.. (not sure how to put that) she jumps on the bed and tries to hump the pillow blankets whatever.. is this normal we dont think so, but how do you ask the vet?? when she does this we give her a time out.. but if we close our bedroom door she will sit outside and whine the whole time.. no win situation.. what do we do??
We have a 10 year old male, and just got a 1 year old female. They are getting along fabulously - Jackson doesn't care if she drinks his water or eats his food (she has her own, of course). Jezebel can play with his toys and chew his bones! When they play, it is very obvious she knows he's the boss. But the one HUGE issue we're having is that Jackson humps her almost continually. We've never seen him behave this way. We've been saying "NO" to Jackson each time, and sometimes pushing him away from her if he doesn't stop immediately, but we are constantly saying "NO", it's getting ridiculous and he keeps doing it. Help!
